Vancouver Aboriginal Health Society (VAHS) is a not-for-profit organization and registered charity established in 1991 to improve and promote the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health of individuals, focusing on the Indigenous community in Greater Vancouver area. We aim to serve our community with programs and services informed by Indigenous culture and knowledge. The VAHS Primary Care Clinic offers a broad range of supportive programs and services, including integrated medical, counselling, and Elder cultural support.

VAHS is seeking one Full Time Registered Nurse to join the Primary Care Clinic team.

FUNCTION

Working within the context of a holistic Indigenous focused, client-centered care model and the vision/values of VAHS, the Registered Nurse provides health care in a multi-disciplinary medical clinic to patients of all ages with a variety of health challenges including HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, intravenous drug use complications, and general health issues. The Registered Nurse works collaboratively as part of the VAHS Primary Care Clinic team to supplement current programs and services.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position is responsible to, and reports directly to, the Clinic Coordinator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Providing nursing care under the direction of the lead medical practitioners, including health promotion, education, and counselling to patients.  
  • Collaborating with other health care professionals to achieve excellence in health services offered, assisting in the establishment of goals, objectives, long-range plans, policies, procedures, and systems of the clinic.  
  • In collaboration with physicians, coordinating patient care including liaison with hospitals, homecare and outreach nurses, detox centers, long-term care facilities, mental health teams, HIV drop-in centers, and social service agencies.   
  • Ensuring all clinic staff are offered annual TB skin tests and influenza vaccinations, and new staff are vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B. 
  • Additional duties include adult immunizations, TB screening, phlebotomy, STD testing and treatment, pelvic and breast exams, contraceptive education and management, pregnancy testing and appropriate referrals, harm reduction education, hepatitis and HIV/AIDS screening and education, advanced HIV care to positive clients, wound care management, and recognition of/assisting in emergency situations. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Current practicing registration with the CRNBC.
  • Current CPR certificate.
  • Minimum 2 years of community health nursing experience.
  • Working knowledge of Indigenous health issues, inner city issues, care and management of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, STDs, addictions, IVDU and mental illness; phlebotomy training, and working knowledge of immunization protocols.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Advanced practice skill set includes delegated functions such as STD testing and treatment, pelvic exams and paps, performing and teaching breast exams, ear syringing, advanced wound care, initiating and ongoing management of contraception, diagnosis and treatment of ectoparasitic infections.
